Science Outreach

I believe that for people to care about the ecosystems they live in, and how science can help inform their sustainable and equitable management, they must know about those ecosystems and the science that tells us about them. This is why I am deeply committed to engaging people from all walks of life with the research I do.
Here are some ways that commitment to science outreach plays out:

Co-founding and directing Riparia: a charity that works to create better connections between youth & science on the water

Working with National Geographic Education to connect with classrooms around the world & share research stories

Writing non-academic articles & blogs  about my work

Read a Canadian Geographic Article about my PhD research on the effects of land use and protection status on streams.

Read a Current Conservation piece to find out about how stream health is linked to the land that surrounds streams.

Check out blog posts about my research on Canadian rivers and Ugandan fish I've written on National Geographic's site.

Creating video content

Watch "Canada's Wild Rivers", an episode of National Geographic's virtual reality series "Into Water", all about the work I do on rivers and lakes in Canada.

I have a YouTube channel where I occasionally post short videos about my research. Subscribe for updates!

Creating radio content

Public speaking

I love public speaking & would be happy to discuss possibilities! Here, I am at the National Geographic Explorers Festival speaking about the importance of freshwaters and engaging youth with these precious ecosystems. Photo by National Geographic.
